A Phyllostachys bamboo are monocarpic, which means that they die after they flower.

You can be lucky and have them for years and they never flower, but when they do flower, they tend to do so en masse.

Opinions vary on whether it is possible for the underground stems to recover. In my experience, the recovery is poor...
