ARGENTI,
John,
A
Management
System
for
the
Seven-
ties.
London,
Allen
&
Unwin,
1972.
viii
&
254
pages,
£4.
This
book
tries
to
draw
up
a
blueprint
for
the
management
of
organizations
in
the
1970s.
As
the
title
of
the
first
chapter
proclaims,
the
aim
is
to
work
out
a
system,
not
a
theory.
The
author
thinks
that
the
existing
literature
deals
only
with
business
manage-
ment,
letting
aside
the
other
types
of
organizations,
national
governments,
international
agencies,
and
so
on.
On
the
other
hand,
most
books
seem
to
him
to
be
offering
solutions
to
yesterday’s
management
problems
rather
than
tomorrow’s.
His
practical
system
is
derived
from
five
basic
principles
and
fifteen
foreseeable
trends
likely
to
influence
patterns
of
management
in
the
seventies.
The
important
elements
of
management,
objectives,
decisions,
structures,
controls,
communications,
and
human
relations
are
analysed
in
the
framework
of
the
new
system.
This
is
a
thought-provoking
book
written
by
a
practising
manager,
who
was
a
founder
of
the
Society
for
Long
Range
Planning.
