EVs are a rare sight in Spain, Portugal and Greece, too.

But the type of powertrain that is proving popular is the PHEV or plug-in hybrid. Sales of these are on the up. As we've mentioned many times, PHEVs make a lot of sense. Do the school run or commute to work on electric power but if you want to go on holiday or abroad, just keep filling with petrol as per normal.

The only caveat is that you need to have off-street parking so that you can charge it.

Using public charging points to charge a PHEV will get you involved in fisticuffs or at least a shouting match. Also, PHEVs are being built with much longer electric ranges than the pioneer cars, with ranges in excess of 50 miles now possible.

The Mercedes-Benz E300e has an electric range of up to 71 miles and is a wonderfully comfortable and serene motor car. Up until this week it was my favourite plug-in luxury but now we have driven the new BMW at used the drive.

One of the reasons it nudges ahead of the Merc is that it has a six-cylinder engine to the E300e's four-cylinder motor.

The BMW engine is a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six that produces 308bhp and drives through an eight-speed automatic transmission that incorporates a 194bhp electric motor.

The combined power output is 483bhp. Under the floor is a 22.1kWh battery that gives a maximum range of 56 miles under electric power.
