In response, Calderdale Council said the baskets needed to be formally requested and ordered and that reminders would be sent to people who normally sent orders to remind them they needed to do this.

The council's assistant director for neighbourhoods, Andrew Pitts, said no orders had been received from the town this year - but the council had put up hanging baskets anyway, adding some summer colour to the town.

Making Calderdale's towns attractive to visit helped local businesses and, in turn, the borough itself, to flourish, he said.
