it will be interesting to study the assessments when they appear in
the Research Bulletin.
Research has continued and a device with a pumping action driven
from the engine crankshaft has been tried. In prototype form it
worked all the time and the speed of its on/off action was directly
related to engine revolutions. Although it gave satisfactory results
rather similar to those achieved by the transmission mounted
systems it had disadvantages and further development of the idea
was thought necessary.
The most recent, and perhaps most promising, achievement in
anti-locking accessories has come from Mullard. This company has
produced a small electronic sensor combined with an anti-locking
device suitable for mounting to a single wheel. In its present form the
unit
is rather clumsy, but it is anticipated that these can be mass
produced at low cost in about five years' time when they will have
been reduced to the sizes of matchboxes. The day can be foreseen
when brake cylinders will be a little larger and will incorporate their
own anti-locking systems powered by the vehicle's battery. Such
units could be fitted to any type of wheeled motor vehicles and
allow a road safety bonus which is not influenced by a driver's
reaction to progress.
