Formalization and consistency heighten
organizational rule following: Experimental and
survey evidence. Public Administration,96,

A number of scores for study 1 and 2 were slightly different. The conclusions from the analysis do not change
because of these corrected results. However, given the value of transparency of science we show these differences
in this erratum. For study 1, we stated that 29% of the sample had current management experience. This should be
28%. For study 2, the SD for age should have been 8.21 instead of 8.20. The age for the written, inconsistent group
and the written, consistent group should have been 47.19 and 48.05 instead of 47.37 and 47.88, respectively. The
ANOVA for age should have been F = .97, p = .409 instead of F = .925, p = .431. The gender distribution for writ-
ten, inconsistent and written, consistent should have been 49% and 30% instead of 47% and 31%, respectively. The
Chi-square for gender should have been 6.241, p = .100 instead of 5.679, p = .128. The Z-score for written and con-
sistent to unwritten and inconsistent should be 5.74, p < .001 instead of 5.98, p < .001.
