The England boss recalled his experience as an apprentice with Crystal Palace.

He says in his new autobiography Anything Is Possible: "I had to mop changing room floors, clean the toilets and look after boots belonging to the first team players.

"I didn't mind hard work, but I struggled with the change from being a schoolkid to a young adult with responsibilities. Being the quiet one, it meant I stood out in the group.

"I didn't help myself on my first day of training. All my peers seemed so much more streetwise and I was just this kid from the suburbs with goofy teeth.

"Nothing about me was cool, and I felt like I'd never fit in."

Things came to a head when Gareth started to pick up injuries and he was called in to coach Alan Smith's office after one of them put him out of a game.
