ALTHOUGH
the establishment of a Research Laboratory
1l...at the Central Police Office, Bristol, is of recent date, we
feel that an outline of the work now undertaken and the
proposed lines of development may be of value at the present
time, when, perhaps, more than ever before there is a general
feeling that the forces of science must be used in every
possible way in the fight against crime.
The
work of the laboratory can be classified under two
main
headings-routine
work and
research-and
Ipropose
briefly to consider in this paper some of the investigations
included in these two categories.
Routine Work
Routine work comprises the carrying out of comparatively
well-known tests which are of assistance in the detection of
crime, and which have, up to the present, been carried out,
when occasion has demanded, in other laboratories.
The
advantage of being able to carry out such tests on the spot
are, of course, quite obvious; there is a considerable saving
of time, and the closer co-operation between the police
officers and the director of the laboratory results in a greater
