CALL
FOR
PAPERS
Conference
Migrants, Development, Metropolis
Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, March 26-29,1992
The
Berlin Institute for Comparative Social Research
is organizing, in cooperation with
the
Interdisciplinary Association for Migration Research Berlin,
the
House
of
World
Cultures
in
Berlin, an international conference on "Migrants, Development, Metropolis".
It will center around the impact of migration processes on various forms of social
development. The fundamental changes of the international economic order and the
rising importance of ethnicity and racism for social disqualification will be central topics
of investigation.
Today, as the formation of new national states in the so-called third world is completed,
the "iron curtain" was removed and the world economy is being restructured on the basis
of Japanese, North-American and European models, development theories are facing
new tasks. In view of stagnant or even declining developments on the African continent
on
in
Latin America in the
1980s,
development politicians and theoreticians speak of
nothing less than a crisis. The conference is going to take up problems of development
theory in the field of migration theory in order to encourage a new way of thinking in
science and politics.
The conference shall provide a forum- to criticize and discuss theoretical problems of
development sociologyand politics;
-
to examine new factors of social change in the third and second world and discuss
-
to describe labour migration as a phenomenon of development;
-
to
discuss the potential of interdisciplinary approaches
to
problems of development
-
to give
a
new, practice-related orientation for discussions
in
development theory.
their influence on migration processes;

all
over the world have been invited
to

of
