'Car veered between lanes before driving through red lights'

Fifteen-year-old Katelyn Dawson was waiting at a bus stop on Wakefield Road, Moldgreen, on the morning of January 10, 2018, when a black BMW came hurtling into her. The BMW had ploughed onto the pavement and hit the schoolgirl and two other pedestrians

The driver, Richard Brooke, 51, of Fenay Bridge, was said to have suffered a fainting fit at the wheel.

He suffered minor injuries. Two other victims - a 17-year-old girl from the same school and 47-year-old Christine Crawshaw - also suffered serious injuries.

The devastating impact was shown on CCTV at Bradford Coroner's Court on the first day of an eight-day inquest hearing yesterday.

The footage showed the BMW swerving from the right-hand lane into the bus shelter, which collapsed on impact. Katelyn was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary (LGI), where she died at 6.15pm on the tragic day.

Eye-witness Alison Ross gave evidence at the hearing. She said she was driving behind Mr Brooke, after taking her children to school, and added the 'big dark' vehicle was veering between the lanes before approaching a set of traffic lights which had turned red.

Ms Ross said the car "shot through" the lights, moments later adding it was like the car "took off like a rocket". Ms Ross said: "The screaming that I heard I will never get out of my dreams." She has since changed her route when driving her children to school to avoid the crash site.

Katelyn, who was in Year 11 and had only six months left of the school year, was on her way...
