Young people will think it's a myth. The rest of us can recall the carefree packing, full-size sun creams that don't need decanting into obscenely priced miniature bottles and taking as many pairs of shoes as you wanted without too much attention paid to the weight. Those halcyon days are well and truly gone, especially if you are flying short haul on a budget airline

Now even your carry on luggage is an extra cost, so no sneaking lastminute extras in there like I used to. Managing on 10kg for a weekend away is a squeeze by anyone's standards, so good luck if, like me, you want options for day and night. And don't even get me started on the hell that is a sandwich bag full of 100ml cosmetics...

City breaks can be the hardest to pack for. Unless you have been before, it's hard to know if it's going to be super casual or if you need to smarten up, plus you have to be prepared for the weather, soggy feet in the city are not cute.

But there are things you can do to cover all bases and stay within the confines. The secret is always pack separates and utilise what you wear to travel in. While comfort is important, unless you're going on a 12-hour flight, wearing a track suit isn't necessary.

Travel wearing a coat you are happy to wear in the city you're travelling to, a trench or an oversized blazer with a T-shirt and wide trousers in a dark colour is a fail-safe look, plus the trousers can be worn again.
