STATISTICAL BACKGROUND TO THE INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS SCENE
The Labour Market
Pessimism about the upward trend in unemployment deepened in the autumn as the seasonally
adjusted figure for adults approached the three million mark. This occurred against the
background
of
further increases in the unemployment levels of our main European trading
partners, and concern about the rapid fading of the American recovery
on
which many hopes had
been based earlier in the year. Unfilled vacancies, although remaining at a higher level than a
year ago, also gave little ground for optimism.
