The end of 2002 and the start of 2003 provided us with a brief respite from direct
conference organization but when we are not running nor preparing for a con-
ference we are usually dealing with the after-effects of one. Looking back on
2002 showed us having delivered three conferences successfully in what one
might call two different continents — Istanbul (IASIA), Potsdam (EGPA) and
Delhi (IIAS) — though whether that was two in Asia and one in Europe or vice
versa depends on one’s judgement in matters far too controversial for me to
mention in a note like this.
The staff changes that have occurred have been a mixture of the sad and the
exciting. On a negative side we were sorry to lose the excellent and efficient
Sarah Azzoug who had run IASIA for several years. She has been siphoned off to
the private sector in Brussels, which has a thriving world of conference business
organizations. However, Robert Szczepankowski joined us in early 2003 from the
Bialystok School of Public Administration in Poland as a scientific stagiare
working on the European administrative arena and he has added a new perspec-
tive to our work. Also Claudia Schiefelbein joined us from Potsdam University,
trailing clouds of glory after having organized, for Werner Jann, our splendid
EGPA event, for a stage. Finally on the staff front, we recruited Juan Cabrera-
Clerget to replace Sarah and I am sure he will be a good addition to the Institute.
He is a product of Warwick University but was born in Colombia and has
French/Spanish nationality, while also speaking fluent German.
EGPA and IASIA
The European Group of Public Administration held its Steering Committee meet-
ing in Brussels in January and welcomed some new members, Barbara Kudrycka
and Calliope Spanou. It reviewed the 2002 outcome and, under Professor Jann’s
dynamic leadership, is looking forward to its Lisbon Conference...
