IIAS Director General
The International Institute of Administrative Sciences (IIAS) was created in 1930
with a clear mandate to improve the practice and theory of administrative sciences
worldwide. As such, it was non-intrusive, and supported member countries with
platforms for the sharing of ideas about good public administration and sometimes
administration in general. This would remain its primary vocation until recently
when IIAS joined the bandwagon of ‘the good governance agenda’ and started
advocating new practices in public governance that were assorted with a more
proactive not to say intrusive approach to materializing practices and theories
on the ground. Its international conferences are no longer limited to presentations
of national experiences and the sharing of ideas thereof. They now include embed-
ded events that try to build partnerships between participating countries and enti-
ties and build coalitions around strategic projects. This can be further seen in the
different manifestations of IIAS service delivery to its members. Setups of trans-
national governance and the degree of intrusiveness of IIAS into the ‘sovereign’
affairs of its members are now conditions for the sustainability of the global gov-
ernance role of IIAS.
It is with this trans-governance role in sight that events were held in 2019, are
planned for 2020, and services are being reconf‌igured. The following review sur-
veys the planned events and services and the major innovations introduced.
IIAS Governance week: Brussels, Belgium, 5–7 February 2020
The f‌irst edition of the Governance week was held in late January and early
February 2019. It was quite successful with a crowd attendance of more than a
100 over the four days. Other than the customary statutory meetings for the three
entities that are managed by the IIAS Secretariat in Brussels (IIAS, IASIA and
EGPA), the event included parallel panels and workshops on open access publish-
ing, accreditation, research and f‌inancial management. Meetings of the IIAS and
