Police Annual
Inspection
1933
ONE
of the most impressive police spectacles seen in the provinces for a con-
siderable time was witnessed by a large crowd at Sheffield on Wednesday,
26th July, 1933, when the Annual Inspection by
H.M.
Inspector of Con-
stabulary, Major-General Sir
L.
W. Atcherley, C.M.G., C.V.O., took place.
385 officers and men under the command of Chief Supt. J. Peake took
part in the Inspection, which was held at the Police Recreation Ground,
Wadsley Bridge, Sheffield.
Various evolutions were performed by the different companies, and His
Majesty's Inspector paid tribute in his speech to
the
quality of the drill and
the
excellence of the Police Band.
A pleasing note was introduced by the presentation of
the
following
awards to members of the City of Sheffield Fire Brigade by Major-General
Atcherley:
For
bravery at a fire at 48 Irving Street, Sheffield, on 5th December,
1932:
Silver Medal to Inspector C.
TEATHER.
Bronze Medal to Fireman A. A.
SHELLEY.
Bronze Medal to Fireman W. D.
OUTRAM.
Bronze Medal to Fireman 1. W.
BLAKEY.
For
bravery at a fire at 138 Smithfields, Sheffield, on 14th March,
1933 :
Bar to Silver Medal to Supt.
T.
BREAKS.
Bar to Silver Medal to Fireman A.
BOOTH.
Bronze Medal to Fireman J.
GENDERS.
After the ceremony a demonstration of fire-fighting was given by the
Fire Brigade under Supt.
T.
Breaks, and an equine display by the Mounted
Department under Sgt. Seranney.
It
was evident that mechanical efficiency is regarded as an integral part
of modern police administration by the Sheffield Police Authority from the
comprehensive assembly of high-powered Alvis and Invicta motor cars,
motor cycles, patrol vans and fire engines.
The
proceedings were witnessed by the
Lord
Mayor, members of the
City Council and a large number of the general public.
