CLARKE TIPS SHANKS TO KEEP

The striker was fresh from scoring a hat-trick for Dundee United against Morton when he was brought on as a substitute in a 4-0 defeat in Russia in October 2019

But there's no guarantee he'll oust Clarke's favoured forwards this week - even though the 28-year-old, now skipper at Hearts, is taking the top flight by scoring storm.

Clarke has loyalties to Lyndon Dykes and Che Adams, who have been his preferred picks up front for the past three years.

Shankland will share game time with the English second-tier stars as the countdown to Euro 2024 gathers pace with a friendly double-header.

Amsterdam on Friday before hosting Northern Ireland on Tuesday week.

And Clarke is looking forward to assessing all three strikers to size up his best starters for Germany. First up is a test against one of the world's best defender - Virgil van Dijk.

Clarke said: "It's a great challenge straight away for the strikers selected to go against Van Dijk and try to cause him problems.

"Lawrence has done well but don't forget Lyndon and Che have been decent for me as well.

"It's good that Lawrence is in there now to keep them on their toes. We have three good strikers and it's up to them to impress."

Southampton's Adams, who has five Scotland goals in 27 caps, missed the camp in November through injury, while Dykes isn't a regular QPR starter for a relegationthreatened side.
