The Prime Minister urged parents to send children back to school on schedule this week because youngsters were not in danger.

He said: "There is no doubt in my mind that schools are safe and that education is a priority.'' The PM warned tougher restrictions could be brought in over the "next few weeks".

But he said: "The benefits of education are so huge overwhelmingly we want to keep our young people in education.'' However Professor Sir Mark Walport, member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies, said teens were most likely to bring Covid-19 into a household.

He said: "We know that transmission occurs within schools. We know that a person between 12 and 16 is seven times more likely than others in a household to bring the infection into a household.'' Paediatricians said the mutant strain spreads up to 70% more rapidly...
