Club make big splash with a funding appeal

Club members who would normally train 20 hours a week, before and after school, have been out of the pool for at least eight of the last 12 months.

Their senior swimmers had qualified for the British Championships which were due to held at the London Aquatic Centre in April last year but which became the first swimming event to be cancelled due to the pandemic.

Many also hoped to make a splash at the 2020 North East Regional Championships - some for the first time - but this could not go ahead either.

Now club members can take the plunge again at their base at Stanley's Louisa Centre as pools have reopened following the easing of lockdown restrictions.

However, most swimming clubs' income comes from hosting swimming galas and Derwentside ASC would normally host five or six every year.

This equates to £20,000 of lost revenue in the past 12 months - money the club sought to make up.

It launched a Crowdfunding page and hoped the public would splash the cash and help them plan for the future.

The Crowdfund was launched on March 30 for a six-week period - and raised more than £6,000 in the first week!

The Stanley-based club then received the news Sport England would contribute £8,000 if they went on to hit their £20,000 target.

They did so with three weeks still to go and the funding from Sport England has now been secured.
