Individuals are usually put on the register as part of a sentencing exercise for a crime they've committed. But it can also be for various business-related misdemeanours such as filing for bankruptcy or failing to report figures

The maximum time someone can spend on the register is fifteen years. If they are found to be starting, running or marketing a business in the UK or in a connected country while banned, they can be jailed for up to two years.

More often than not the disqualifications are made in the civil and county courts. But there are times when business owners have appeared before the Crown Court due to their dodgy business dealings.

These include Richard Mathew-Williams, a businessman jailed in September last year for stealing £800,00 to pay off his debts. The former successful hotelier, who owned sites such as Liverpool city centre's waterfront Crowne Plaza, was jailed for 28-months after abusing his position of trust to transfer the huge sum of money out of the back account of one of his former companies.

Another man who appeared at Liverpool Crown Court was "cocky" fraudster Peter Daly, who cheated thousands of small firms out of £2m in a magazine publishing. Daly, of Hilton Grove, West Kirby, was sent down for eight years and a month over the fraud carried out between October 2011 and November 2015.

And John Peter Doyle, a truck driver who stole £337,000 in VAT while still claiming unemployment, was jailed at Liverpool Crown Court back in February 2019. A HM Revenue and Customs investigation revealed Doyle traded millions of pounds of vehicles and pocketed the VAT charged on every sale.

The reasons for why people have been disqualified are varied. But the maximum amount of time someone can be disqualified for is 15 years.
