REGIONAL CRIMINAL RECORDS

THE
EVER
INCREASING
NEED
for combined police effort and collabora-
tion between police forces in the rapid pursuit
of
criminals who
respect no boundaries is being met with enterprise and initiative.
Avigorous lead was given in the Home Counties by the formation
of
a special department at New Scotland Yard, from which has
emerged the fine work increasingly done by the detectives drawn
from forces in the Home Counties to form the Metropolitan and
Provincial Police Crime Branch.
The Midland Regional Criminal Record Office, now known to
all police forces as
"Mid-ero
",
and the Midland police forces
regional crime squad were formed on the initiative
of
the Chief
Constable of Birmingham, followed by
"Mer-ero"
in Liverpool
to provide regional records for the police forces on Merseyside, and
by "Man-ero "in Manchester for the police forces in South-east
Lancashire and Cheshire. The grouping in each region of experi-
enced detectives, the provision
of
wireless cars for their speedy
communications and transport are obvious developments, and proof
of
their value is to be seen in the calendars of cases for trial in the
Crown Courts and quarter sessions in the regions named. There
have been similar developments in recent years in Bristol, on Tyne-
side, and in South Wales.

Mid-cro"
and the Midland Crime Squad have been serving
the areas in and around Birmingham and the West Midlands with
increasing usefulness for over five years. Sixteen forces contribute
to the records and service, the police authorities concerned pooling
