COMMUNICATIONS
IN
TUNNELS
Ever since the terrible disaster in the London Underground at
Moorgate, the writer has had some concern that one day it might be
necessary to provide communications in a tunnel in the County in
which he serves.
It
iscertain
that
every Force in the country has a
number
of tunnels
that
might be involved in some disaster. The worst situation in Kent
is a double tunnel under the White Cliffs at Dover. Here the railway
line emerges half-way through the cliff in a spotknown for the rotten
nature
of the chalk.
The
railway is perched on a ledge which is
inaccessible from above, whilst below is a steep
drop
to the sea. A
disaster there could only be approached underground from either
end.
This article describes a piece of research carried
out
by Sergeant
Alex. Walter of the Technical Services Unit at Maidstone, for which
the writer is responsible,
and
it is entirely due to Sergeant Walter's
initiative
and
enthusiasm
that
the study was undertaken. He is a
licensed radio amateur.
