'Concerned' friend drove car after night of drinking

Alfie Parkinson was seen driving through Jesmond with no lights on in the early hours of the morning, but went into "panic mode" when police tried to pull him over

The 21-year-old had been out drinking earlier in the evening but became worried when his flatmate didn't return home. Parkinson, of Newlands Road, Jesmond, Newcastle, then drove his flatmate's car in the hope of finding him. Instead, he was pulled over by police and arrested.

Last week, Parkinson appeared at Newcastle Magistrates' Court facing a charge of drink-driving. He pleaded guilty to the offence and was banned from driving.

The court was told that police were on patrol in Newcastle in the early hours of March 18 when they saw a Vauxhall Corsa travelling without its lights on. Paul Coulson, prosecuting, said: "[Officers] flashed the vehicle several times to inform the driver of the vehicle to stop. It was not acknowledged.

"[The officers] illuminated their lights, however, the vehicle continued up Osborne Road. They then moved to the side of the vehicle to gain the driver's attention. The driver did not respond to this. [Officers] then moved their...
