S
IR: Earlier this year, an approach was
made to
the
Royal Australian Chemical
Institute (R.A.C.I.) by the Victorian Police
Department asking whether the Institute
would sponsor aNational Symposium on
the Forensic Sciences. This request was
referred to
the
Institute's National
Sym-
posia Committee, which recommended to
its Council
that
such a symposium should
be held. This was agreed to.
An Organizing Committee was formed,
and is currently composed of Mr. P. B.
Price and Mr. G. A. R. Carnie (R.A.C.I.),
Mr. R. M. Braybrook (Assistant Commis-
sioner, Victorian Police), Mr. L. K. Turner
(Director, Forensic Science Laboratory,
Victoria), Dr. J. I. Tonge (Director,
Laboratory of Microbiology and Pathology,
Queensland), Dr. T. C. L. Brown (Depart-
ment of Civil Aviation, Melbourne),
with
myself as Chairman and Convener, and
w. E. Purnell (Executive Secretary,
R.A.C.I.) as secretary to the Committee.
So far, the Committee has seen this as an
opportunity to bring together those
interested in any of the many disciplines
which operate either regularly or occasion-
ally in the forensic field.
As a guide to those who might be
interested in attending and participating
in such a symposium,
the'
following topics
in their forensic application have been
suggested as a preliminary to establishing
adefinitive programme: forensic pathology
and toxicology (including their aspects in
the industrial, hospital and pharmacological
fields); aviation pathology and toxicology;
drugs and alcohol (e.g., use, misuse,
methods
of'"
detection and." estimation);
forensic chemistry (e.g., specialized tech-
niques, atomic absorption, neutron activa-
tion analysis, etc.); serological and other
biological techniques; police science's (e.g.,
hair, fibre and textile Identification, col-
lection of evidence, firearms evidence,
document examination, etc.); expert testi-
mony; evaluation of scientific evidence.
This is not intended as a complete cover-
age
of
subjects for discussion. The Com-
mittee would be grateful to receive further
suggestion~;
for inclusion in the agenda. It
would
al~
appreciate the names and
addresses 9f those who might be willing
to read a
~
paper or act as chairman in
various discussion groups.
At this stage it is proposed to hold the
symposium in
the
New Medical Centre,
University of Melbourne, Parkville
Victoria, 3052. The suggested time
i~
October 8 to
II
(inclusive), 1969. It is
hoped
that
this will immediately precede
aConference of Police Technicians which
will be held in Hobart about
that
time.
