CORRESPONDENCE
SILENCING
MODERN
MOTOR-CYCLES
To the Editor
of
THE
POLICE
JOURNAL.
SIR,
The
following account which was
published
in The Times
of 24th December, 1934, is of
such
interest
that
I
venture
to quote
it,
as some of
your
readers may have failed to take note of
it.
The
account is presented by
the
"Motoring
Correspondent"
of The
Times
:-
" Noise in daily life, especially in urban districts and in streets, is an
increasingly difficult problem, yet one which grows more urgent every
month. Some weeks ago the Auto-Cycle Union carried out a silence test
in which eight different street noises were compared and graded, a modern
single-cylinder motor-cycle proving the most silent of all. An
official
certificate was issued, and reproductions have now been published. They
show, by a series of diagrams, the comparative results of the audiometer
test which was made to establish the motor-cycle's claim to exceptionally
silent running."
The
"
Motoring
Correspondent"
goes on to
remark
that
the
chart
which was taken of this
and
various
other
street
sounds
"affords
evidence
that
the motor-cycle, far
from
being, as is so often contended,
the noisiest vehicle on
the
road, can
now
be one of
the
most
silent,
where amanufacturer takes
trouble
and
undertakes
the
necessary
research
".
The
significance of this demonstration is
worth
emphasizing.
I
understand
that
in
the
past
the
police have been faced
with
the
difficulty
that
magistrates
think
motor-cycles
cannot
be silent,
and
have therefore been loath to convict.
If
the
Auto-Cycle
Union
is
able to prove conclusively
that
cycles can be silent,
there
should
be a successful prosecution of almost every motor-cycle on the
road
at
present
IYours, etc.,
TOWN-DWELLER.
