who is fortunate enough to win a large prize in
a
sweepstake, has nothing but
acorn for the person who has tried to enrich himself at the expense of the
fellow-citizen who has trespassed against the law without incurring any degree
of public disapproval. Perhaps the days of the common informer action may
be numbered. That it possesses something which is useful no one will deny
;
but as a sort of auxiliary to action by the police and other properly constituted
authorities it is by no means always a success and is, in some cases,
a
form of
proceeding which
is
entirely contrary to the spirit

the time.
CORRESPONDENCE
CRIME STATISTICS AND POPULATION
To the Editor
of
THE
POLICE
JOURNAL.
SIR,
Might
I
suggest that it would be of interest to readers of
The
Police
Journal
if information could be given showing statistics
of
crime, with popu-
lation, in the principal cities of the United Kingdom, the Dominions, India,
and similar statistics of the various colonies.
In the West Indies the colonies of chief importance are Jamaica, Trini-
dad, British Guiana, and Barbadoes.
To
complete its interest such information should give in each case the
strength of the Police Force.
I
hope that you will bear this suggestion in
mind. Yours faithfully,
A
JAMAICA READER.

SERIAL ARTICLES.
To
the Editor of
THE
POLICE
JOURNAL.
SIR,
May
I
be permitted to congratulate you on the innovation contained in
the last issue
of
The
Police Journal
(Vol.
IV.
No.
3).
I
refer,
of
course, to
the interesting account of the investigation
of
the Southampton garage
murder (the Podmore case).
These and other articles of a similar nature cannot fail to be of great use
and interest to all serving police officers, and for this reason
I
venture to
suggest that in future the complete article should be printed in one issue of
the
Journal.
It is difficult for most of us
to
keep clear in the memory all the
incidents of a case which has been read months ago.
Yours faithfully, POLICE OFFICIAL.

[We shall bear our correspondent's criticism in mind, but we would
point out that all such serial articles have appeared in the same
