Councillors to stand down at next elections

Among those to stand down are Clr Donald Firth who has served for over 30 years, Clr Naheed Mather, the first Asian woman elected to the council, and Clr Bernard McGuin who has represented Almondbury for eight years

Below are all six councillors who won't be standing for re-election this May: ¦Clr Donald Firth - Conservative, Holme Valley South Clr Firth is one of the longestserving members of the council, elected in a by-election in June 1989 to represent the Holme Valley South ward. During his time in post, Clr Firth has served as a Cabinet member, sat on a number of committees, and was the Mayor of Kirklees from 2006 to 2007.

Upon entering the meeting, Clr Firth received a standing ovation for his service. Leader of the Conservative group, Clr David Hall described Clr Firth as a "really forthright, down to earth chap", wanting the best for his community. ¦Clr Naheed Mather - Labour, Dalton Councillor Mather was the first Asian woman to be elected to Kirklees Council. She has been described by colleagues as "dedicated and committed" to her role as a councillor and previously said that her 12 years on the council have been an "incredible journey".

Clr Mather has held several positions over the years including as a Cabinet Member, taking on numerous portfolios.

¦Clr Bernard McGuin - Conservative, Almondbury Councillor McGuin was elected to represent Almondbury ward in 2016 and currently serves on the council's Planning Sub-Committee for Huddersfield. He has been vocal on a multitude of issues impacting his ward, including the future of the Tolson Museum.
