Abstract
Purpose – This purpose of this paper is to describe the course of information literacy given by the
Chongqing University library to cultivate university students’ information awareness. Up-to-date
information retrieval skills, comprehensive document skills and innovative thinking are encouraged.
Design/methodology/approach – Adopts a range of innovative teaching/learning methodologies
using modern teaching methods and materials; and combines these with scientific and technical
consultation and patent agent cases. Describes how this course has been brought into the university
undergraduate and graduate teaching plan.
Findings – The utilization rates for documents and resources in the library have improved; and
many other social benefits have been achieved.
Originality/value – Will guide others wishing to set up an information literacy education course
and enhance the information literacy of university students.

Information literacy is a necessary requirement for university students in the present
information era; and education is a foundation for cultivating innovative people.
Libraries in universities have resource advantages, including a human resource
advantage of being able to cultivate university students in information literacy.
Therefore, these libraries should utilize their advantages fully to develop students’
information literacy awareness, update their information retrieval skills and the ability
for information research and prediction through various channels.
Meaning of information literacy
Information literacy is also called “information qualification” and “information ability”.
The concept was raised first by the Chair of the Information Industry Association,
USA in 1974. He defined information literacy as a technology used to resolve problems
with information tools and information sources. Since the information era has arrived,
people have a fuller understanding of information literacy. In 1989, the American
Library pointed out the most up-to-date definition of information literacy: “if you want
to be a person with information literacy, you should know that you need information
and you should also have the ability to identify, evaluate and utilize the information”.
Information literacy consists of the following four parts: first, information
awareness, which means people’s reaction to information; second, thoughts of
information, which means the procedure to process information; third, knowledge on
