Steve Clarke's men carved out numerous chances against the

Dutch - but were dished out a painful lesson in being clinical.

Lawrence Shankland, McGinn, Scott McTominay and Ryan Christie all had opportunites to score . All of them failed.

But the Scots were on course for a positive performance for 70 minutes until the painful closing spell when the Netherlands picked them apart.

Clarke's side have now gone six games without a win for the first time since 2008 - and shipped an eye-watering 18 goals in the dirty half dozen.

McGinn said: "The scoreline is an embarrassing one for us.

"We are all experienced players. We know coming to places like this, we are playing top European football, it's not a surprise.

"When you get good spells in the game, myself, Christie, Shanks, one of Turn to Page 50 ¦ From Back Page them has got to go in.

"Off the back of that, you can say you've played well and created chances.

"But we've got to be more streetwise and when it goes to 2-0, shut up shop a bit, be less ambitious, be narrower.

"That's the thing that hurts the most, we are going into a tournament where goal difference is so important."

The roof fell in on Scotland in the final 10 minutes but they were left to curse several missed chances - including one from

Shankland when it was just 1-0.

McGinn (inset) said: "I've been in that position many times as a Scotland player.

" I thought Shanks was outstanding. It's not easy going in and playing against big Van Dijk, one of the best defenders in the world.

"The big man was so strong, he was laying it off, linking the play well. He's a really good out ball for us. I think he'll be happy.

"I think the goals will always come when you are a player like Shanks. We're proud of how he played."

Boss Clarke now has to pick up his side and get a result against

Northern Ireland at Hampden on Tuesday.
