Don't blame public for Covid rate rises

Across the North, we have seen the infection rates go up. Here in North Tyneside the rate has more than doubled in a week. There is a fear the new Indian variant, which appears to be doubly infectious, could cause a third wave later this year.

This has forced authorities to increase their efforts in the vaccination programme, which is commendable.

However, Matt Hancock's blaming a few people who are unvaccinated for getting COVID is obscene. Especially, when the truth is that the majority of patients in hospital in Blackburn, for example, had already received one vaccine.

This government has deliberately delayed the inclusion of India on its Red List as cases there soared. Other countries with lower infection rates were included.

Maybe the Indian trade deal was at the front of the

Government's mind rather than the risk of the virus variant spreading on these shores.

We currently have the highest number of cases of the Indian variant outside India itself.
