EDITORIAL
This
is
the fourth and last issue of Volume· 1 of the International Review
of
Victimology.
It
is
not for the Editors to evaluate the success of the Review
as reflected by the quality of the articles included in this volume. In terms
of the Editors' own objectives, a very real achievement has been the
international and multicultural character of the contributions. Some kind
of balance seems also to have been struck between theory, research and
policy. With respect to policy, however, there has admittedly been little
material on victim assistance programme evaluation. This seems to reflect
a general paucity of evaluation research on programme effectiveness being
conducted today both in the victimological and the correctional field -
with the notable exception of drug rehabilitation evaluation.
Whether the
gaps-
if
any-
are perceived
as
being in the area referred
to or any other, they are of course determined by the nature and quality of
the articles submitted. Hence the most articulate and constructive mode of
drawing attention to the existence of a gap
is
to submit an article designed
to remedy the omission!
In processing the manuscripts which appeared (or did not appear) in the
first volume,
we
were assisted by a number of reviewers
-including
members of the International Editorial Board -whose contributions
have been invaluable in the production of the Review. Thanks also to our
Book Review Editor for his indefatigable efforts "down under".
This
is
the last issue to appear under the co-editorship of John Freeman,
who
is
resigning for health reasons.
It
was only by virtue of his untiring
efforts that the Review was launched, and all those who believe that its
publication will provide (has provided?) a meaningful contribution to the
literature
will
remain indebted to him. We hope that he will continue to
serve the Review actively as a member of the Editorial Board.
As from the next issue, the current Associate Editors of the Review,
David Miers and Joanna Shapland, will become Co-Editors.
