Elderly couple died in horrific six-car smash

The 75-year-old man and 85-yearold woman are understood to be from Holmfirth. They were pronounced dead at the scene of the devastating crash at the Barugh Green crossroad junction in Barnsley at around 2pm on Saturday

Police said their family is being supported by officers. The crash happened when a white Suzuki and a grey Range Rover collided, with multiple other vehicles also involved.

Pictures show the horrendous damage caused to most of the cars.

Residents living nearby said they heard a loud bang and saw the shocking aftermath.

Seven other people received hospital treatment, where their injuries were thought to be serious but not lifethreatening.

A 65-year-old man was arrested and has since been bailed.

On Sunday, floral tributes had been left at the scene - one bunch had a message which simply said: "Thoughts and prayers with everyone involved."
