A survey of 400 recruitment firms suggested falling levels of activity in March

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) said there were reports of hiring freezes and cost cutting.

Recruitment consultants said there had been another marked decline in permanent placements.

There was a fifth consecutive monthly decline in demand for staff and evidence of an increase in redundancies, said the report.

REC chief executive Neil Carberry said: "Economic growth has been sidelined for too long and must be at the heart of this year's general election campaign.

"Today's data shows the economy in a holding pattern waiting for inflation and interest rates to ease.
