The deadly Daleks, known for their chilling catchphrase "exterminate!", have even had a makeover for the show.

But what do you know about the Doctor Who villains? To mark the festive special NATASHA WYNARCZYK presents 10 fascinating facts...

1 The Daleks first made their appearance in December 1963 when they captured the then Doctor William Hartnell. They are from the planet Skaro and are the most evil beings in the Doctor Who universe.

2 They are the only monsters in the series to have battled every incarnation of the Doctor. When the 2005 series, starring Christopher Eccleston as the title character, began it took writers only six episodes to bring back the Daleks.

3 Their iconic look was based on the salt and pepper shakers that you see in restaurants. Creators also hid the wheels of the Daleks, so that they were able to glide around.

4 The original Daleks were controlled from the inside by operators who had to move their eyestalks, domes and arms and flash the lights on their heads in sync with the actors' voices.

The Daleks are a huge army

5 of soldiers with ranks. Most of the ones seen in Doctor Who are drones - the lowest rank - but they still have the ability to wipe out entire races. The most powerful Dalek in their army is their leader, Davros.
