FFP rules are 'silly', insists finance expert

Premier League sides are, of course, able to make losses of up to £105m over a three-year period but, given how Newcastle's revenues will take time to grow, the Magpies do not have the same spending power of the established order despite their wealthy backers.

Newcastle's owners have spent upwards of £400m to date, but the consortium have always vowed not to 'abuse any systems' - long before Everton's punishment sent shockwaves through boardrooms up and down the country back in December.

Everton (twice) and Nottingham Forest have been docked points in recent months, while Leicester City have also been charged with an alleged breach of the league's profit and sustainability rules.
