But once it is there it can be tough to deal with and keep away. Bathroom and kitchen experts Plumbworld say it is important to know what seemingly harmless routines increase the risk and to take steps to cut them out

A Plumbworld expert said: "Incorporating a few adjustments into our daily bathroom habits can lead to a substantial decrease in mould growth. For starters, taking the simple step of shaking off excess water before exiting the shower can dramatically reduce the moisture left on the floor and walls.

"This not only cuts down on the amount of standing water that contributes to a humid environment but also lessens the workload on bath mats and towels. Keeping the bathroom's exhaust fan in top condition by cleaning it regularly ensures it operates efficiently, pulling moist air out of the bathroom more effectively. This is crucial for preventing the damp conditions that mould thrives in.

"Another effective strategy involves a routine wipe-down of the bathroom's surfaces after use, particularly the shower area. Employing a squeegee to clear water from the shower walls and doors prevents the accumulation of water droplets, which are prime spots for mould to grow.

"It's also wise to pay attention to how we store our shower accessories. Loofahs, sponges, and even bath toys can retain moisture and become breeding grounds for mould if not properly dried out after each use. Squeezing out excess water and ensuring these items are stored in a place where they can dry completely will further aid in keeping the bathroom mould-free. These practices, though straightforward, are powerful tools in fostering a healthier, mould-resistant bathroom.”

According to the Plumbworld expert there are five key habits that can cause issues. This is what they say the problems are -and measures you can take to cut the risk of mould:

Leaving Wet Towels and Bathmats on the Floor

Wet towels and bathmats left on the floor after a shower or bath can significantly increase the humidity levels in the bathroom. This environment provides a perfect breeding ground for mould spores that are always present in the air to begin growing. The fabric of towels and mats absorbs water, keeping the surface underneath them moist for extended periods. This not only accelerates mould growth on the floor and mat but can also contribute to a musty smell in the bathroom. To prevent this, it's recommended to hang towels and bathmats in an area where they can dry quickly and to wash them regularly
