Littler's fairy tale run to the PDC World Championship at Alexandra Palace in January included a 4-1 demolition of his boyhood idol Van Barneveld in the fourth round.

But the Dutch legend was unimpressed by the Warrington whizz kid's failure to return complimentary texts about Littler's triumph at the Belgian Darts Open earlier this month.

Speaking to Dutch outlet Sportnieuws, 56-year-old Van Barneveld said: "So that's the weird thing about it - I understood then that I am his example.

"That at the World Championship you don't chat, I can understand, but at other tournaments? "The other day I walked up to him to shake his hand then he took out his earplug for a moment and only said the most necessary thing."

Van Barneveld decided sending Littler a direct message was the best way to communicate, but he was unhappy with the teenager's response.

"To that he responded, 'Yes, I only respond to text messages. I'm not actually on WhatsApp.' Well, fine, so I sent a text message: 'Congratulations (on your win) in Wieze.'

"And then, nothing. Fine - then I'm also a bit done...
