Forget city life - you can have big night out at home

Mum of two Mandy could be referring to York or Leeds - but in fact she's talking about her own home town, Cleckheaton, which to outsiders might be considered an unlikely location for an 'upmarket' scene of wine bars and the like

She is adamant the West Riding former mill town has developed a great night scene, although she doesn't go out as much these days.

Cleckheaton has a good range of bars and pubs, with something to please everyone.

She can namecheck half a dozen just off the top of her head, beginning with the Wetherspoons pub, The Obediah Brooke and including the 1924 Cocktail Bar, live music venue The Loft and George's Bistro and Bar. There's also Sam's Gin Bar, The Chain Bar and various pubs for those who prefer a traditional pint.

"I have heard a few people say it's a good night out," adds Mandy.

The older generation also have a soft spot for the town.

Brenda, 74, who lives near the town centre, said: "Cleckheaton is nice, it's lovely. I know quite a few folk who come here to do shopping for food and for window shopping, just for a wander around. I have lived in Cleckheaton for around 40 years. Where I live it is reasonably quiet - you don't get a lot of bother."
