The underground critters play a "vital" part in helping to grow our food

But overuse of pesticides and chemical-laden fertilisers is thought to be behind a drastic fall in their numbers. Dr Ailidh Barnes, an ecologist at the British Trust for Ornithology, started investigating after seeing a fall in bird numbers who rely on munching the invertebrates.

She said: "Earthworms are vital at looking after the soil, which is the basis of all life and what grows our food. They are vital for everything."

The creatures boost the quality of topsoil where 95% of the planet's food is grown by digging tunnels which help water and air pass through.
