Report
of
Adjudicators
We are pleased to report a substantial increase in the number
of
essays
submitted, sixteen as compared with eight last year and nine in
1971.
They covered a wide variety of topics, ranging from
a
detailed analysis
of
administrative history to a survey of a vagrants hostel.
A
handful of essays fell well below the standards that we consider are
appropriate to the competition, being either too superficial or lacking
any focus, or both. The bulk of the entry although revealing considerable
capacity, and literary competence in some instances, had either insufficient
content or lacked originality.
There were two entries, however, that were
of
unmistakable merit,
and one of these,
The
MinistTy
of Labour,
1916-1924;
a graveyard
of
social
rcform
?
by ‘Hodge’ we recommend be awarded the Haldane Silver
Medal and first prize
of
A75.
The second,
The
International Secretariat
by
‘Ashby-de-la-Zouche’ we strongly recommend for a meritorious award
of
E50.
Both are scholarly studies which are carefully researched, develop
interesting themes and present their conclusions convincingly
-
but
Hodge’s essay shows
a
little more depth and originality.
