Hops give bitter its taste but the plant does not like hotter, drier conditions.

Analysis last year found a drop of nearly 20% in output in many key hopgrowing areas across Europe.

Researchers in Kent are isolating hop genes in the hope of producing more climate-change resilient varieties.

They also want to produce more intense flavours. Danielle Whelan, of the Shepherd

Neame brewery in Faversham, Kent, said of the work: "Without it the British pint is going to die off.
