on adult protection

Abstract
Purpose – This short briefing aims to discuss Social Care Institute for Excellence’s (SCIE’s) work in
safeguarding adults.
Design/methodology/approach – SCIE has produced a research briefing on self-directed support
and personal budgets, and work on restraint, personalisation and risk as well as other projects that
promote best practice in adult protection.
Findings – Placing the person at the centre of safeguarding processes will support practitioners to
move away from ‘‘service-led’’ procedure-focused responses.
Originality/value – Together, these resources aim to improve access to up-to-date knowledge. This will
support the rapid pace of change in safeguarding practice.

I’ve seen vulnerability taken advantage of, on more occasions than I would like to think about
really (Karen Webb, Residential Care Home Manager).
Karen was talking on Social Care TV about how, in her current job, she is focusing on
prevention of abuse via better communication between staff and people who live in the
home. At Ivy Bank House, Karen leads staff in the listening ear project. Key staff give
residents a chance to share what is going on in their lives, so that any concerns or
safeguarding issues can be identified and addressed as early as possible.
This film on Social Care TV is just one example of the numerous projects that the Social Care
Institute for Excellence (SCIE) has been working on in order to improve practice in
safeguarding adults.
SCIE’s work
Along with three films on Social Care TV, we have the ‘‘Dignity in Care’’ online guide. It is
often said that safeguarding issues are less likely to arise in and environment that promotes
dignity and respect.
SCIE has produced a research briefing on self-directed support and personal budgets, and
work on restraint, personalisation and risk. SCIE also works in partnership with Local
Government Improvement and Development (formally the IDeA) on their safeguarding
programme.
