I AM TOO OLD FOR THE 'INFLUENCER OLYMPICS'

If the name means nothing to you, while it may sound like a millennial take on National Express, Coachella has nothing to do with getting you from A to B. It is in fact an arts and music festival that takes place over two weekends at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California

It launched in 1999 and for a good few years was the hottest ticket in town. Quite literally, it is in a desert and temperatures are regularly around 30°C.

Beyoncé, Madonna, Guns N' Roses, Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish have all graced its stages and it always looked to me like a great way to enjoy music in the sunshine.

My best friend and I - despite the two of us rarely going to festivals (at least not ones that involve tents and not getting the opportunity to shower regularly) - even harboured a fantasy of attending one day.

We had many a long conversation about what we would wear. Probably shorts, maybe a pair of cowboy boots, a bit of suede, some studs, fringing... glitter.

And we may or may not have toyed with the idea of twisting flowers through our hair which would be teased into Victoria's Secret model-style waves.

This was a good few years ago. Long before we hit peak festival flower crown.

Please don't judge. But then it dawned on me that whenever I looked at people's online posts from Coachella, they were rarely anywhere near a stage. They weren't dancing with wild abandon or singing along to the acts.

They were invariably images of models/actors and... here comes the 'i' word: influencers.

If these people were not paid to go, then at least they would have been invited to enjoy the show free of charge to help plug a jeans, lingerie, or swimwear brand, perhaps.
