In truth, these wounded players look in need of a change of scene, particularly after Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final defeat against Manchester City. You only had to hear the usually upbeat Bruno Guimaraes speak to realise that as the midfielder talked about Newcastle's 'struggling season'

Bruno, in the same interview, called on his side to 'try and get Europe for them' and that has to be Newcastle's aim when those who jet off to Dubai and those who fly away on international duty reconvene for the final 10 games of the season.

After all, just three points currently separate Newcastle, in 10th, and West Ham, in seventh, ahead of the two teams meeting at St James' Park following the break.

However despite the backing Eddie Howe retains, the 46-year-old and his players can't afford to let this season peter out given the standards that have previously been set.

In fact, it was striking how Howe, unprompted, said that it was 'absolute nonsense' to suggest Newcastle's campaign was over on Saturday night - just 36 hours after refuting

Jamie Carragher's claim that the players look like they are 'almost ready' for the end of the season.

Writing the rest of the campaign off in mid-table would not be a good look. It certainly would not scream elite.

Not when there are 30 points still to play for and influential figures still to return from injury.

Also, on paper, Newcastle do not have the worst run-in albeit this is a frustratingly inconsistent side who have not only failed to beat Bournemouth and Luton Town home and away this season but who have, also, been thumped by...
