But the young fencer has just been awarded her biggest achievement yet, after being selected to fence for England in the Commonwealth Cadet and Junior Championships in New Zealand in July - making her the only Northern England based women's fencer representing the country in her category

And the achievement is particularly special because Indigo has had to work "extra hard" to keep pace with competitors from London and Edinburgh, who have more opportunities and access to more resources.

Her mum, Becki Zaffino, said: "She's worked so hard for this - we're not in one of the central hubs for fencing, which are Edinburgh and London, so she's had to work twice as hard.

"Doing this from Yorkshire, there's not been the same support system there as there would have been in one of the capital cities.

"It's taken her grit, determination, hard work and perseverance - it's all of that that she's put in to achieve this. This is hopefully the first. To have done this from Yorkshire is pretty epic - and a lot to be proud of."

Indigo followed in the footsteps of her older brother and dad and took up fencing when she was just six years old. As she started to improve, her dad, who is a member of both Barnsley Fencing Club and The

Manchester Fencing Centre, stopped concentrating on his own fencing and instead took up the role of Indigo's coach.

Becki added: "New Zealand is an amazing opportunity for Indigo to represent Yorkshire and to hopefully be a role model for other girls in the north, however fencing is not a funded sport. We...
