STATISTICAL BACKGROUND TO THE INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS SCENE
The Labour
Market4reat
Britain
In October the number of adults out of work fell
on
a seasonally adjusted basis by
13,100
to
1.3
million. The drop in the seasonally adjusted total was the first real check, apart
from a small decline last March, in the almost continuous rise in unemployment over the
last
two
and
a
half years. However, the improvement is thought to be temporary given the
likely effects on economic activity to be felt from the sharp rise in interest rates and the
monetary squeeze introduced in October.
