The
Labour
Market-Great
Britain
During the fourth quarter of 1969 the seasonally adjusted figures for wholly
unemployed, excluding school-leavers, had decreased
in
October and Novem-
ber but went up again in December. In the
six
months since May 1969 the
figures had shown an average increase of about 3,000 per month. The under-
lying trend
of
unemployment was upward and the end of year level was higher
than at the corresponding period
of
1968.

On
a
seasonally adjusted basis the average number of unfilled vacancies for
adults in the fourth quarter of 1969 increased on average by about 4,100
per
month. In the
six
months since June the average increase had been about
3,800 per month. Unfilled vacancies were on an upward trend though the
December figure wa below that
of
the previous year.

In the fourth quarter of 1969 the labour market had become slightly less
tight
than
in the same
period
in the
previous
year.
The
rise
in the seasonally
adjusted unemployed
and
the levelling
off
in the
rise
of
registered unfilled
vacancies suggested the possibility of
a
slacker labour market in the
New
Year.
