The
Labour Market-Great
Britain
During this period unemployment on a seasonally adjusted basis was higher
than in the corresponding months of 1969. Since the beginning of 1970 the un-
employment figure has been rising. Although the upward movement faltered
in April and May in the following months it accelerated.

seasonally adjusted basis the numbers of unfilled vacancies have decreased
on average by about

per month in the three months April to July, and by
about 1,500 per month in the

months since January 1970.

In the period May to August the labour market was less tight than in the
same period of 1969 but even
so
many large wage increases were conceded by
employers.
Wages
and
Earaings
In the first six months of 1970 basic weekly wage rates rose by
8
per cent and
basic hourly earnings by 9.2 per cent. This compares with rises of
