Introduction
The object of this article is to present the conclusions we have
drawn from the Ciudad Lineal District Elder Abuse Detection
Project (Madrid Municipal Council). This project originated
in the need for available instruments to aid professionals
working in the health and social fields in systematising the
suspected existence of abuse. In the face of this need, we
proposed creating a protocol for detecting possible cases of
self-neglect and abuse in the domestic setting. This protocol is
made up of a detection scale which we call the Scale of
Inadequate Treatment (SIT) and which we hope to validate, as
well as a definition of the process professionals must follow
(activities to be carried out, the person or persons carrying
them out, etc), so that cases can be handled adequately.
The project is made up of several phases, which began with
the study of research on this subject and will conclude with
the validation of both the scale as well as the design process.
At present, we have covered the first four phases (revising
the bibliography, designing the detection protocol, a review by
a group of experts of the protocol and professional training)
and we conducted a pilot study prior to the study that will
allow us to actually prove the scale’s validity.
In this article we focus on the conclusions we came to,
which were based on the findings obtained in this first study
on the detection scale project we endeavour to validate, and

abstract
The pilot study described here is
part of a domestic elder abuse
detection project developed by a
social services team in Madrid. The
project’s fundamental objective is to
validate a scale for detecting
domestic abuse and self-neglect
that can be used by social workers.
A pilot study with a sample of 34
elders was conducted to determine
the detection scale’s response
format and contents.
