Investment Zone focus on health and digital

In November, it was announced that the government would be awarding funding to the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) to allow for the delivery of a new Investment Zone in West Yorkshire. The investment will be distributed among the region's local authorities, with Kirklees' share to be managed by Kirklees Council to support innovation in the health, wellbeing and digital industries

The council's plans for the zone were greenlit by the government last week and centre on the Station to Stadium Enterprise Corridor - a scheme seeking to boost economic development in Huddersfield and create high quality jobs for local people. This 'corridor' stretches from Huddersfield Railway Station to the John Smith's Stadium, anchored by the new National Health Innovation Campus (NHIC).

The council says that its plans for the Investment Zone will build on Kirklees'

existing local strengths in innovation and research and will aim to develop a strong cluster of interconnected businesses, suppliers and other local research institutions, extending beyond Kirklees to other Investment Zone sites across West Yorkshire.

Revenue funding will also provide more business and innovation support for organisations in the health and digital sectors. This will build on existing programmes already benefiting from government support, including the university's Health Innovation Partnership and 'Thrive' - a new incubator programme for brand new businesses and entrepreneurs in the health and wellbeing industry. Thrive will be based at the Glass Box, the flagship business centre for Business Kirklees, which sits next to the National Health Innovation Campus. Both projects are already funded by the government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
