Championship play-off hopefuls Brentford now stand in their way of progress to a first domestic semi-final since 2005 and Bruce wants his players to savour the moment.

He said: "Once you get to a quarter-final there is a semi-final at stake and we have not been there for years.

"I hope we are looking forward to it, certainly I am.

"The games are coming thick and fast but what an opportunity we have.

Bruce was reminded of the last League Cup quarter-final Newcastle won in 1975 against Notts County when an own goal set up a semi-final clash over two legs with Spurs.

Bruce added: "It has been far too long and that has been well documented but we have given ourselves a chance.

"As always the big teams are still there.

"What has happened in recent years is only Wigan have won a cup apart from the Premier League's top six.
